Severe and Persistent Mental Illnesses are mental illnesses that cause extended impairment in daily functioning. These illnesses are often life-long and require various interventions.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a disorder with lifelong symptoms. Schizophrenia is currently being recognized on a spectrum including schizophrenia, schizophreniform, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, and brief psychotic disorder. Some common symptoms include visual, auditory, or tactile hallucinations, delusional thinking, and an inability to communicate effectively (often times not making sense when speaking).

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder comes in several forms and can be classified as having psychotic features. Bipolar I generally consists of manic episodes that last a week or more, and depressive episodes that last at least two weeks. Bipolar II sees symptoms such as at least four days of hypomania and at least two weeks of depression.

Major Depressive Disorder

This disorder is defined by a persistent depressive mood where a person may experience an extreme loss of interest in things they used to enjoy, changes in sleep, appetite, energy levels and concentration, heightened levels of sadness, mood swings and more. These changes often have astonishing impact on someone’s life such as losing their job, not tending to responsibilities, and losing relationships.
